To Upgrade??

As I browse through numerous food blogs, I am awed and attracted to the lovely food pictures posted and they make me want to try out the recipes. When I look at mine, (oh dear!) how dreary they look!
My digital camera is about 7 years old. How obsolete mine has become in terms of all the latest 'what it can do' features! I am still mulling on whether I ought to get a new one cos' I am not much into photography. Having the latest model might not yield a better result. In other words, I am clueless about cameras!! Decisions, decisions, decisions!

  1. My digital camera is not that younger than yours, mine is 6 years old ;) My husband has been pestering me for years...he wants to get me a new one, but I told him I wont be able to handle complicated ones, so unless my camera died on me, I wont get a replacement :)

  2. Hi Happy Homemaker,
True, getting a new one will most probably add more confusion for me. I am not one who likes complicated stuffs. Most likely I'll stay with my old faithful.

  4. Thanks Pris. I am not very IT savvy. So still groping around a lot.

  5. I'm also not into photography and my camera is at least 8 years old, only 3 megapixel. Honestly speaking, I think it's not the camera problem that I'm taking not-so-fantastic pics, I blame it on my skills :P

My camera just died on me but I've got another spare camera, so no, I won't be getting another one unless ... (can't even think of a reason why I need to get one)

  6. Hi Blessed Homemaker,
I tend to agree with you. I dislike reading instruction manuals and try to trust my 'instincts' which are not very helpful. So the pics turned out so-so. ;P

  7. Busygran, from the pictures in your post, I think your camera is fine. It just lacks lighting. I still have a lot to learn in terms of photography. Like sometimes when I cooked some real good food I wanna share at night for dinner, I will save some for photography tomorrow and snap snap snap and then reheat it and eat it. Sounds good?

  8. Hi Quinn,
Regarding the lighting, you have made a salient point. I do take pics at night and my home lighting is pretty bad for photos. Thanks for tip.

  9. yes you just need to take pics in natural light and see the difference. Try..your pics will be great. :)

  10. Hi busygran,

I can understand how you feel when browsing blogs with very nicely taken pictures. I feel the same way too at times and my pictures are taken with a 3-yr old 8 megapixel sony digital camera.

From what I gather, digital cameras only serve the purpose of taking pics with ease. It is hard to take food pics that will give the 'wow' or professional factor. On the other hand, with much more powerful SLR cameras, taking pics with blurred out backgrounds seem to be much easier, something I dun think can be achieved with digital cameras. Getting a SLR camera might mean spending more effort into understanding photography.

Taking pictures of food with ordinary digital cameras give a more 'made at home' feel. It gives readers a different perspective as compared to blogs with professional photography. Just my 2 cents worth.

    cheers =]

  12. Hi Bakertan,
Agree with what you said. I guess I have to be satisfied with what I have and do it to the best of ability.

  14. I was in the same boat as you not too long ago. I keep seeing so many nice photos on everyone's blog. I ended up buying a Canon 450D last year and have not regretted it since then. It is definitely better to shoot in natural light wherever possible. The flash just makes your photos too harsh.

Thanks for advice. Will take note. Not going to take pics at night.
